Patricia Warhurst and Precious “Thank you again for all that you have done for Precious and I. Words do not do justice to the appreciation I feel for all your gentle guidance that has vastly improved our ‘way of going’ and understanding of each other. You have been pivotal to us making a large quantum leap in the last year.”

Equestrian Sports Coach Book Review
Book Review from Jeanette Garrett
Title: Equine Sports Coach
Author: Alison Lincoln
Publisher: Blackwell Publishing (2008)
Review Published in: Equestrina Sports NZ Coaches Magazine, 2010
A thoroughly modern approach to equestrian coaching, describing the difference between instructor, trainer and coach. The coaching styles form the coach centered approach i.e. coach dictates what is done when and how at each session through to the rider centered approach i.e. coach has an inclusive approach and consults a number of people – rider, parent, team selector etc.
“Effective coaching is determined by the nature of the problem or situation and subsequent response of each rather than the inherent personality of the coach.”
The benefits and values of mentoring for all coaches. Mentoring from your own peers, more and less experienced coaches and from other sports codes providing an open network for learning and guided development. Appropriate goal setting – outcomes short medium and long term but not necessarily ‘winning driven’ – more about the ongoing development to gain success from personal best performance.
The coaches prospective on how to structure training programs, risk evaluation, session planning for individuals and groups, the power of reflective thinking and evaluation at the right time and methods – the ‘when’ and the ‘how’ all backed up with easy to follow templates for your use.
Specialist coaching for disabled, elite and teams includes nutrition and impact on performance. Each chapter has short case studies from a range of different equestrian codes, ending with key points – ‘Self Study’ and ‘Coaching Exam Style Questions’.
This is not a book about training methods or the horse as such but coaching dynamics, ideal as a reference with the ability to keep the coach on track, organized and focused. The equestrian coaches ‘must have’, ideally suited to those working through the Equestrian Sport NZ coaching training and NZ Pony Club Association coaches training programs. Equestrian Sport Coaching gives the ‘tools’ to explore and develop your coaching. Also very good book for the competitive rider that wants the edge on fellow competitors.
